Contemporary Art in Asia.
The historical influence of the Chinese civilization on the neighboring countries and in general on all the East and South east Asia Countries is well documented. Archeological discoveries, factual evidences and general perception of China reveal her historical role as the Caring and Scaring “Mother” of Asia.
Today the influences are reciprocal and complicated to analyze: Korean Pop culture and Japanese Manga have a strong influence on the new generations in China. The past decade saw a great impulse on the contemporary art appreciation and popularization of Asia Contemporary Art under the influence of Western Esthetic.
We have designed and created the Summer Vacation Project with the aim to put artists from different Asian Countries together, offering the opportunity to melt the different esthetics and to present their works in an Italian Exhibition.
Lake Maggiore and her tradition of Artists (Summer Vacation Location).
Lake Maggiore has a tradition of hosting artists during Summer since the end of 19th Century. Artists belonging to the “Scapigliatura an artistic movement born and developed in Milan, used to escape the heat of Milan and enjoy the hospitality in the villas of some wealthy families around Maggiore Lake.
At the beginning of last century the Swiss city of Ascona during the summer months was the host of European leading cultural personalities through the “ Monte Verita’” foundation for several years .
Castello Di Frino.
The first information about (available of) the Castle is when Pietro Morigia, member of a well-known family in Rome, was invested of the land around the north part of the Lake Maggiore by the Duke of Milan in 1477.
In 1530, the Barnabites ecclesiastic Order was founded by Giacomo Antonio Morigia and others. In 1633, the grandson entered the order and nominated Cardinal by Pope Innocenzo XIII. To celebrate the event, he invited Antonio Cucchi to paint the frescos in the room of the buildings, still visible today.
In the 19th century the Building was restored and brought to his current style as Summer Villa by the Architect Pirovano.
Summer Vacation for Asian Artists.
Artistic profession in Asia is usually a well-established pattern of consecutive steps of education, a process of gradual refinement. Skills and knowledge are passed on after a long apprenticeship, similar to the careers of the Court Mandarins in Imperial China, while there are few self-thought artists and even less Bohemienne carriers.
This Program has been named Summer Vacation Project to emphasize the spirit of Vacation from the bustling and hectic life of Asian cities. The location of the Residency, on the hills around the Maggiore Lake offers an escape from the heat and an opportunity to immerse into the History of the Building, the local traditions and the natural beauty of the unique ecosystem.
With our Project our aims are:
- offer to artists from Asia an opportunity to immerse in the Italian Summer atmosphere of living and working in a relaxed and historical property on the shores of Lake Maggiore.
- bring artists with different Nationalities together and offer them the opportunities to living and working together to explore the similarities and difference of their own esthetic.
- bring more understanding and appreciation of the current practice of Asian Art in the West and possibly germinate some influence there.
We are very excited to see what the cultural exchange from their interaction and the influence of the place will bring to their works.
